The purpose of a Certificate of Analysis
A Certificate of Analysis, often shortened to CoA, is a document that reports analytical information for an identified material. Depending on the issuer and specification, it may record identity testing, purity, appearance, mass or other defined characteristics.
The document should be read as a record of the tests and results it states. Its title alone does not establish which methods were used, who performed the work or whether every property of the material was assessed.

Details to check
A useful review begins by confirming that the document can be connected to the material under consideration. The exact fields vary, but several details commonly help establish scope and traceability.
- Product name or other material identifier.
- Batch or lot reference, where the document is batch-specific.
- Date of analysis, issue date or reporting period.
- Analytical method or technique associated with each result.
- Specification, acceptance criteria and reported result, where supplied.
- Testing organisation, laboratory or document issuer.
- Document status, version and any approval or signature information.

Method and result belong together
A result should be interpreted alongside the method that produced it. For example, a chromatographic purity result describes the outcome of a stated chromatographic assessment; it should not automatically be treated as proof of every possible impurity, identity attribute or physical characteristic.
Where the method, units or acceptance criteria are unclear, the correct response is to request clarification rather than infer a result that is not recorded.

What a CoA does not establish
A CoA does not by itself establish suitability for a particular experiment, human or veterinary safety, clinical efficacy, lawful use, sterility unless specifically tested and reported, or the characteristics of a different batch.
It also does not replace an organisation's own acceptance process. Laboratories may need additional records, risk controls or confirmatory work depending on their protocol and quality system.
